Originally written by Cole Porter, this version of the song "You do something to me" is performed by Sinead O'Connor from the Aids benefit album Red, Hot & Blue created in the 1990's. I've always loved this pretty song, and it's fun to see Sinead O'Connor going glam for the video too. I highly suggest this entire compilation, actually. Some other artists on the Red, Hot & Blue cd include Tom Waits, Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop, and Annie Lennox, just to name a few.

Music Monday 2 : For River . . .

17 years ago on this day I woke up to the sound of the news on TV that would make my emotional teenage self cry almost all day long. One of my favorite actors had died a tragic death at the age of 23. He was such a huge part of my generation and I think losing him was very sad for many people around my age. Every November 1st, I find myself listening to this song simply titled "River" from Natalie Merchants album, Tigerlily.  It's my way of  remembering this beautiful young actor whom we had the pleasure of watching on the big screen, even for just the short time that he was here.

Rest in Peace, sweet Prince.

Music Monday : Sometimes, Always - A love song

Ahh, Love. And it's not even February yet.
I'm sorry dear blogger friends, but I'm a *hopeful* romantic, I can't help it. My parents were married young, have been married for almost 40 years, and they're still in love. Knowing this makes me happier than I can tell you. I always think that the reason why they are still together is because they made it a point to get through the bad times together no matter how hard it was during those moments.

Admittedly, I myself am still learning about the L word. But here's what I do know. . .

I thought this song was perfect for a music Monday post in October, especially with Halloween coming right up this weekend. When I was in high school, I had a bit of an obsession with Robert Smith of the Cure. (My first crush on a boy in makeup) And though my high school phase of black lipstick and nail polish is over, my fascination with the macabre is very much still alive and well. ;) I love this creepy video!

Music Monday, In A Matter of Speaking.

I first heard this beautiful song when I went to the theater to see the movie A Mighty Heart. The song started playing during the credits and I couldn't leave the theater until it was over. After I got home, I had to look it up and buy it. So glad I did, because I found out this band sings many lovely tunes! This is not the real video below for the song, but someone put it together on youtube from old film footage of women of yesteryear, and I like how it gives the song a bit of a different meaning regarding the expression of women.

I must listen to this song about 75% of my mornings upon waking and having coffee or tea. There was a time before I knew the name of it when I was trying to find it online, going crazy because I'd heard it again somewhere and knew it was familiar to me. . . the strangest things. It was from a movie I watched when I was a little girl. I couldn't believe my mind remembered it.

It's my favorite of all classical pieces; incredibly beautiful and calming, and seems to go through such a range of emotions. I think it works wonders in the de-stressing area. Hope you enjoy, dears.

What'll I do?

Okay, let's be honest, some covers of songs just plain STINK. I won't go into naming the ones on my personal bad list, but it's true.

HOWEVER, sometimes, and more often than not actually, I come across a remake of a song that I absolutely love, and on a few occasions, even by accident!

A few years ago when my boyfriend worked in Portland for the summer, I found this song completely by accident on youtube and sent it to him when I was missing him like crazy. I love the voice of the girl, and her expressions and actions in the video reminded me so much of how I felt at the time.

The lovely song, originally written by Irving Berlin was also sung in the past by Julie London and Frank Sinatra, both also worthy of a listen.

He fell in love with a Mexican Girl

Saturday was my Mama's birthday, and I wanted to do a really special post for her that day, but we had a tragedy happen in our extended family so I wasn't able to. :(

So. . .
I decided to do this Music Monday post for her instead. :)

My mom is the very core of our family. I always joke to everyone else about how not everyone in my family likes one another but we ALL love my mama, and it seems like my siblings and I, like little birds, flock to her, even as adults, when we all get together. This special woman is THE most incredibly affectionate, caring, and loving person I know. My sis and I were also recently discussing how it seems like no matter if we're mad or sad or just distressed about something, anything, Mom just knows somehow exactly what we need to hear, and then everything is better after that long talk or phone call. That's what I call a gifted gal.

Happy Birthday to my Mom!

I chose the song, "El Paso" by Marty Robbins because it's a song I've heard my dad sing to my mom for my whole life! I've always loved when my Dad has sung this to her. ♥

Music Monday : For Grandma

I lost my Grandma Dolores 5 years ago today. Before that day, I don't think I had ever experienced true grief. We were very close and I am forever thankful for that. A little bit about her: She was Mexican-American and often spoke Spanish with her English. She was also an AMAZING cook, and such a wonderfully caring mother and grandma to a great big Hispanic family that continues to grow. AND, just as a little side note, my little etsy shop is actually named after her, as many people referred to her as "Lola". :)

I will never forget all of the times Grandma made it a point to cook me anything my heart desired on my birthday. We also bonded on many occasions staying up late at night while talking about the times when she herself was a young woman. I treasure these memories so dearly!

The two songs below by The Innocence Mission had, at the time of her death, helped me accept her passing. The group's lead singer Karen Peris, had lost her father shortly before recording the album (titled "We Walked In Song"). I love the words to both songs so much! If you've ever had someone close to you pass, I hope you find comfort in the lyrics as I did then, and still do now... ♥

reminded of when my brother bought me this tape below.

JJ Fad was one of my faves back in the day. I loved "Supersonic" and believe me, was it overplayed at my house! Did any of you have this tape too?
My cousins and I used to have so much fun trying to rap along,

Music Monday: Supersonic by JJFAD

You were the sweetest thing that I ever knew

Annie Lennox and John Malkovich people! I have always loved the dramatic and passionate performance of the leading lady of the Eurythmics in this video. Also starring (yes that is him!) Hugh Laurie of HOUSE. This video is so visually rich as you'll see; just chock full of luxurious lace and velvet costumes, along with powdery pale faces and Victorian wigs. Watch the story that unfolds and see if you think the end is real or just her imagination. The part when Annie's character makes a scene playing tug-o-war for John with his new bride is the BEST!

My parents listened to Sade when I was a little girl, and I remember seeing the album and thinking she was one of the most beautiful women in the world.
Aside from her exotic looks,
she has one of the most soulful, sultry voices I've ever heard.
She's been one of my top favorites ever since.

I love the song "Is it a Crime" from the above album about a woman who wants her lover back even after he's been with another woman.
Kind of a dramatic video, but the lyrics are incredibly passionate!

I've Been Hit With Your Charm

Thank goodness I had a cool older brother growing up to introduce me to music I would end up loving for the rest of my life! I must have been in middle school or high school around the time my brother was listening to the Sugarcubes (on cassette tape mind you).
This was the first time I was ever introduced to the wonderfully talented Bjork.
I've been in love with this quirky beauty ever since.

She's so adorable in this video, and I love that the song is not just about accidental love it's also about an accidental something else. . .

My Music Monday -- The Breeders

I started listening to the Breeders in high school, thanks to my older brother who always seemed to know about cool music (at least in my eyes).

Kim & Kelly Deal were my idols back then!
